The app is named, appropiately enough, Nature Near You, and was developed for The Nature Conservancy, a conservation organization working around the world to protect lands and waters for both nature and people. This non-profit group is one of the best conservation organizations that I am aware of and definitely one that I support.

I became aware of the app when the developer, Treeline Interactive, reached out to me with info about it. I downloaded the app and liked the look and feel of it immediately. From my standpoint, I found several features appealing. First and foremost, being a photographer I really like the ability to organize and share my nature photos as well as see others from around the world. Nothing inspires me to grab the camera like seeing an awesome wildlife photo that someone else shared.
Another good feature allows you to easily find other Nature Conservancy sites near your current location. If you are travelling and looking for a spot to hike, photo, visit, etc., this app makes it easy.
Finally, another section of the app makes it easy for you to support The Nature Conservancy's work and get free phone backgrounds at the same time. I can't underestimate the value of The Nature Conservancy's work in today's age. Without their help, the lands that we have to share with wildlife would definitely be much more scarce than it is.
All in all, I think this free app is awesome and I definitely enjoy having it loaded on my iPhone. It is available in the Android Marketplace as well as iTunes, and it is free, so download it and check it out.
Here is a write-up about the app provided to me by the developer:
Get out and explore the world around you with the Nature Near You mobile App. Become a nature photographer with the Capture section. This allows you take pictures of the landscape around you and share images with friends.
In the Explore section you'll be able to view photos others have taken in the "Recent" category. Want to keep track of images you love? The Favorites section is the perfect way to store the photos that inspire you. Have fun viewing the "Photo of the Day" or try win your spot in this section by submitting your images to Flickr. Finally, want to see natural habitats from all over the world? The "Map View" allows you to see pictures taken by others from different areas, and travel throughout by just clicking the photos on the map.
If you need more space to explore natural environments around you, the "Visit" section is perfect. After the app locates your current location, it will show you a map with all the Nature Preserves near you. Now you'll be able to take your photography to the next stage!
In the "Donate" section you can find free downloadable backgrounds of beautiful nature photography. Find out whats going on in our natural world with Nature News, and if you would like to make a donation to give back to nature, the donate section is safe and easy to use.
View our video on youtube to find out more and see the app in action. Download the free App in the App store and Android Marketplace and start exploring!
Hope you enjoy the app and get to use it soon.
